Washroom Disinfection, Sanitization

Ensuring that washrooms in commercial buildings are thoroughly disinfected and sanitized is crucial for maintaining a hygienic environment.

Washrooms are high-traffic areas that are prone to the accumulation of germs and bacteria, making washroom disinfection, sanitization and regular cleaning essential.

Washrooms are used frequently throughout the day, leading to the potential spread of harmful pathogens. Proper disinfection and sanitization help prevent the transmission of illnesses and ensure a safe environment for employees, visitors, and clients. According to guidelines from Health Canada and the CDC, regular disinfection of high-touch surfaces in washrooms is vital in reducing the risk of infections.

Arelli uses dedicated tools for cleaning, disinfecting, and sanitizing washrooms for all types of commercial cleaning it performs.

How is Washroom Disinfection & Sanitization Performed in Commercial or Office Buildings?
It’s important to close off washrooms when cleaning during the day or when people are present at the facility. If the cleaning is done at night, crew members must make their coworkers aware of their intention to clean the washroom – just in case something unexpected happens when the door is closed. Beyond that you can find the steps required to perform washroom disinfection and sanitization and cleaning below:

1. Preparation Stage:
Ensure Team Members have Appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Cleaning staff must wear appropriate PPE, including gloves and masks, to protect themselves from exposure to cleaning chemicals and pathogens. This becomes more important when performing deep cleans or disinfection services that were popular during the pandemic.

Utilize Wet Floor Signs: Place wet floor signs to alert individuals of cleaning in progress and prevent accidents. Safety comes first.

2. Dusting:
Use the dedicated duster with an extension to reach areas up to 7’. Dust according to processes shown HERE

3. Initial Cleaning:

Remove Trash: Empty all trash bins and dispose of waste properly. Pay close attention to biohazardous waste at facilities where recovery bins exist. Follow instructions as provided by the customer.

Clean Surfaces: Use a neutral cleaner to wipe down surfaces, removing any visible dirt and grime. Make sure you use a dedicated microfiber cloth. Arelli utilizes Red for the washrooms.

4. Disinfection:
High-Touch Areas: Focus on disinfecting high-touch areas such as door handles, faucet handles, toilet flush handles, soap dispensers, and light switches. These areas are the most likely to harbor germs. Ensure you wipe only once. Use the 8 sided folding technique. See video here.

Disinfectant Application: Apply a CDC, EPA, or Health Canada-approved disinfectant to these surfaces, ensuring they remain wet for the recommended contact time to effectively kill pathogens. See wiping standards HERE

Toilets and Urinals: Clean and disinfect toilet bowls and urinals using specialized cleaning agents. Ensure thorough cleaning under the rims and around the base. Don’t forget to look behind the base and clean accordingly.

5. Floor Cleaning:
Mopping: Use the dedicated mop and bucket with a neutral pH cleaner. Mops should be color-coded to prevent cross-contamination (e.g., red for washrooms).

Technique: Mop in a figure-eight motion to maximize coverage and efficiency. Rinse the mop frequently to avoid spreading dirt.
Restocking Supplies:
Toilet Paper, Soap, and Paper Towels: Ensure that all dispensers are fully stocked. The customer usually shows where supplies are stored. Ensure you inform the client if supplies are running low. You can use the Arelli App if you are an Arelli crew member.

Air Fresheners: Replace or refill air fresheners as needed to maintain a pleasant environment.

How Frequently Should Washrooms Be Disinfected and Sanitized?
The frequency of washroom disinfection and sanitization depends on the level of use and traffic. In high-traffic areas, cleaning should be performed multiple times a day. For moderate use, Arelli recommends daily cleaning, with deeper cleaning and disinfection performed weekly. In low-traffic areas, cleaning schedules can be adjusted accordingly. Speak to an Arelli field specialist to find out what’s right for you and your facility.

Pro Tips for Effective Washroom Disinfection:
- Use Separate Cleaning Tools: Ensure that tools used in washrooms are not used elsewhere to prevent cross-contamination. We recommend the colour Red for washrooms.
- Ventilation Helps: Leave the door open or ensure proper ventilation is present when cleaning washrooms. Sometimes the chemicals may be overpowering when you are exposed to them for extended periods of time.
- Regular Inspections: Conduct regular inspections to ensure that cleaning standards are maintained and address any issues promptly. It’s also recommended to listen or look water leaks. There have been situations where cleaners noticed broken water pipes or toilet flushes before anybody else did – saving clients thousands of dollars in costly repairs or water consumption charges.
