How is Mopping Done in Office buildings or Commercial Facilities?
Arelli uses dedicated mops for different areas. This helps prevent potential cross contamination. For example, mops indicated by a Red colour are dedicated to washrooms. Other colours used are Green, Yellow, and Blue. Normally mop colours are matched with the microfiber cloths that are used for wiping.
Here’s what you need to do to perform a successful mopping task in a commercial facility or an office.
Preparation:
Begin by removing any loose debris from the floor using a vacuum or a broom and placing a sufficient number of wet floor signs to alert individuals of the cleaning process and to prevent accidents. These are incredibly important steps that must NOT be overlooked. Wet objects and debris on the floor may increase the chance of slip and fall – while unexpecting pedestrians may not notice the slippery condition of the floor while entering an area that is being mopped.
Choosing the Right Mop:
Use a high-quality microfiber mop for better dirt and moisture absorption and ensure the mop is clean and in good condition to avoid spreading dirt. Make sure the colour of the mop used is the one for the area you are planning to mop.
Selecting the Cleaning Solution:
- Choose a neutral pH cleaner approved by CDC, EPA, or Health Canada to avoid damaging floor surfaces.
- Dilute the cleaning solution as per the manufacturer's instructions.
Mopping Technique:
- Start mopping from the farthest corner of the room and work towards the exit to avoid stepping on the cleaned area.
- Use a figure-eight motion (8) to maximize coverage and efficiency. (If you do it sideways – it becomes infinity! ∞)
- Rinse the mop frequently to dispose of the dirt and grime that has been picked up by the mop.
Drying:
Allow the floor to air dry completely before removing the wet floor signs.
Ensure proper ventilation to expedite the drying process.
How Frequently should I Mop Surfaces in and Office or Commercial Facilities?
It really depends. Like any other cleaning task, the frequency on several factors, including the type of facility, foot traffic, and specific cleaning needs. Seasons play an important role too with Winter particularly a messy season when it snows. Arelli recommends daily mopping for for high-traffic areas such as entrances, lobbies, and hallways; weekly mopping for areas with moderate foot traffic like conference rooms and office spaces and spot mopping to address spills or accidents that may happen in the workplace. Remember to use the Wet Surface signs to ensure safety in the workplace.
Pro Tips:
- Always use wet floor signs to prevent accidents.
- Change mop water frequently to avoid spreading dirt.
- Ensure the cleaning solution is appropriate for the floor type.
- Allow the floor to dry completely before removing safety signs.
Different types of flooring materials require specific mopping techniques and solutions. Make sure you choose the right strategy while always keeping safety in mind.
- Hardwood Floors: Use a damp mop with minimal water to prevent damage to the wood. Heavily stained and greasy hardwood floors may need an application of a high concentration liquid handsoap with very little water first followed by multiple attempts of rinsing with damp cloths to remove the grime.
- Tile Floors: Employ a pH-neutral cleaner to avoid etching or discoloration. Clean the mophead frequently.
- Vinyl Floors: Use a mild cleaner and avoid abrasive tools that could scratch the surface.
